Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.

At their current size, it takes between 20-25 employees to provide an excellent quality of production, administration, and customer service. They proudly pay “living wages” or better to every employee at JHS Pedals all while maintaining 100% of JHS Pedals production in the USA. Every single JHS Pedal, JHS Mod, and JHS hand painted pedal is assembled, tested, and shipped from their facility in south Kansas City USA. All JHS Pedals PCBs always have been and continue to be populated exclusively in the USA in one of three locations… Kansas City, southern California, and Michigan. Their enclosures are drilled and powder coated by Mammoth Electronics in Oklahoma and they print all their graphics onto their enclosures in-house at their Kansas City facility.

With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. Through going back and forth and tailoring it to Andy’s tastes, the “@“ was born and eventually released into production in 2016. The Volume gives you plenty of headroom to play with, while the Drive control has a wide range from high gain blues to thunderous distortion. The tone controls work together to give you the ability to shape your tone and sit perfectly in a mix. The EQ works as a standard bright/dark tone control, while the Air control rolls in top end like a presence control so you can have just the right amount of brightness for articulation and clarity. The three-way toggle gives you the feel of different wattage amplifiers. The up position is the 25-watt setting with the most compression and saturation with the least amount of volume. The down position is the 50-watt setting for a good balance of compression and openness. The middle position is the 100-watt position for tons of volume and open crunch while being less focused.

Two channels are better than one!

New to the AT+ is an independent foot-switchable Boost...essentially creating a second channel and gain stage for the pedal. The boost side of the AT+ is a slightly dirty and overdriven pre-boost that allows you to hit the front end of the AT drive channel and achieve more saturation and definition for applications where you need more. Since the Boost is independent, it can be used alone to drive your amp or other drive pedals in conjunction with the AT+ drive channel.

This pedal requires standard 9V DC Negative power, consumes less than 100mA, and measures 2.2"x4.8"x1.6".

You can safely run “The AT“ at 18 or 9 volts.

Demo Videos

Compact and versatile tone-machine

When both toggles are down, you are in the lightest gain setting, amp-like chimney breakup

G1 flipped up adds a touch of drive for more riffy grit

G2 flipped up puts you almost into distortion land, with more saturation and sustain for lead tones

Both toggles flipped up sends the Kilt V2 into almost uncontrollable gated fuzz/distortion that will cut through anything

______________________________________________________________________________

When the opportunity to work with StuG came about (legendary guitarist, writer, producer, and founding member of UK band Delirious) we couldn’t pass it up. Right out of the gate Stu G wanted a dirt box that could essentially cover any-and-all ground he needed for his studio work and extensive touring gigs. From that request the Kilt was born, and for the V2 we have refined it to be a compact and versatile tone-machine.

The Kilt V2 still has the fantastic circuit at the heart of the version one: a heavily tweaked Expandora style dirt box that gives you more tonal options than you might ever be able to use. We use a specifically chosen op-amplifier that offers super low noise, improved slew rate for a smoother structure, and a character that just feels better than the original Expandora. Then there are three toggles that enhance the tweak-ability even further. The cut/flat toggle gives you the option to cut the low end frequencies to better sit in the mix. When in the “flat” position, the bass response is much beefier than the original Expandora for those heavy guitar riffs or bass grit. The G1 and G2 toggles let you select various forms of distortion via select resistance values that switch in and out in the clipping section of the circuit. This method is very different than your normal diode clipping selectors that you commonly see on drive pedals. This gives you multiple configurations and tonal options, helping the Kilt V2 cover light transparent drive all the way to a wall of fat fuzz/distortion and everything found in-between.

– When both toggles are down, you are in the lightest gain setting. Superbolt in 2012, we never dreamed that it would become one of the most recognized and distinguished pedals in our history. Turns out there are guitarists all over the world that are loving the ‘60s-era Supro amp-in-a-box tones that this pedal churns out. In designing the pedal, we paid very close attention to the feel and sound that made the original amps the go-to combos for players like Jimmy Page, Brian Setzer, and Switchfoot’s Drew Shirley. And with the SuperBolt Version 2, we’ve upped the ante by giving you access to our versatile Gain boost circuit via the front-mounted toggle or our own JHS Red Remote footswitch (sold separately).

Vintage amp tones with a tap of your toe

If you want to know what our SuperBolt V2 is capable of, just listen to the opening chord stabs of Led Zeppelin’s debut album. The JHS Pedals Unicorn is our version of this heralded effect, continuing the inspiring modulation/phasing/rotary sounds that never fail to push musical boundaries. And just like the originals, we included a toggle for choosing between a Uni-Vibe* effect and a traditional vibrato setting. What sets Unicorn apart from all other vibe-style circuits is that it is the first-ever fully analog, photocell-based vibe with tap tempo as well as ratio, external tap control, and external rate control via expression pedal (optional). And the Unicorn does it all with only four knobs and a mini-toggle switch. The Sweep knob controls the what frequencies will be affected. Sweep knob to the left will cause low-mids to be affected, while Sweep knob to the right will cause hi-mids to be affected. The Lo/Hi toggle is like a "Q" function and controls how sharp the frequency peak is that you’re affecting with the Mids knob. "Lo" is a softer and wider peak for slightly subtler affect as you tweak the Mids/Sweep knobs. "Hi" is a sharper and steeper peak giving you a very pointed and defined effect as you tweak the Mids/Sweep knobs.

This pedal is fantastic on an almost-breaking-up amp to send it into midrange tube driven heaven, or with an overly scooped distortion to give you the bite you need to cut through with every "djent," blues lick, rock riff, or lead line. The Volume control enables you to set the overall volume however you like it, either dialed back, at unity or boosted. The Speed knob is a manual control for the speed of the tremolo, which you can also set with the onboard tap-tempo switch. The Mix knob controls how deep the tremolo is perceived, from fully clean to fully wet. A great feature of the Kodiak is that you can turn the Mix knob all the way down and use the Volume to boost your amp or other pedals, acting as a preamp or slightly driven boost. The Ratio control gives you the ability to dial in faster speeds that are perfectly synced with the BPM of your tap. You can choose from quarter notes, eighth notes, "triplets", or sixteenth notes. The Wave control gives you four different wave variations to choose from: Sine, Rhythmic, Square, and Ramp. The Sine wave is a classic amp-like tremolo sound, the Rhythmic wave gives you an interesting rhythmic pattern that can be used in many different time-signatures for different effect, the Square wave gives you a more choppy trem sound, and the Ramp wave gives you a warbly type of sound. With all these options, sit down, grab a jar of honey, and spend lots of time with your new bear-friend to really get to know what he has to offer!

The Kodiak also features a Tap/Expression jack on the right side of the pedal. The pedal was encased in a large gray folded metal enclosure that resembled Electro-Harmonix more than DOD, and it was conspicuously lacking the “250” model number. The typeset and DOD logo were different, but it still had the same charm and quirky feel of the vintage 1970s DOD. The sticker on the pedal’s backplate said “DOD Electronics Company” and listed the home address of founder David Oreste Di Francesco, as well as a number: 75. According to my interview with David himself a year later, I had found the 75th DOD pedal ever made and one of the first ten DOD Overdrive / Preamps (250) ever sold. The internal parts dated as early as 1972 and, according to David, were harvested from old radios and electronics he scavenged when he started building his first effects.

The JHS Overdrive Preamp is a faithful replication of this unobtainable V1 of DOD’s most loved pedal. The controls are simple. The Level control adjusts the overall output of the circuit and lets you cut or boost the signal. The level control of this version has been modified (corrected) from the original wiring of the #75 unit, giving this pedal much more volume on tap. The Gain control adjusts the amount of gain inside the overdrive circuit. Turning up “Gain” creates more clipping as it pushes the op-amp and hard clipping into overdrive. We’ve also added a slider switch to this production version, which wasn’t included with the original DOD 250. While researching the #75 “Big Box” pedal, I acquired a second early big-box unit which used a completely different clipping arrangement. It only seemed fair to offer this switch so that you could explore these two variations for yourself.

This “Big Box V1” DOD 250 circuit definitely feels like a 250, but with a few changes: more gain/grit overall and more unique low/mids. When you put it that way, $249 sounds pretty reasonable.

Let’s take a look at the controls.

The operation of the PackRat is about as simple as it gets. The “Volume” control adjusts the overall volume of the pedal. The “Distortion” control lets you raise and lower the amount of gain or distortion that the circuit produces, and the “Filter” control allows you to brighten and darken the sound of the overall effect. This is effectively a simple, low-pass filter. Lastly, we have “Mode” control. This is a stepped pot that clicks into place as you scroll through the nine legendary versions of this circuit. As you change the mode, the analog circuitry is rewired, resulting in brand new values of resistors, capacitors, diodes and op amps.

DISCLAIMER:

Although I’ve put several years of research into the history, circuit topology and version history of the RAT, I know that my findings may still ruffle some feathers. I’m okay with that.

I have tracked down over 100 different RAT specimens for study, and I’ve performed almost twenty hours of interviews with former ProCo employees about the circuit design, evolution and production of this pedal series over the decades. And basically? A lot of the widely accepted “facts” about the differences in RAT versions, including some of my own beliefs, were wrong. Most assumptions about how specific RAT models sound different or better than the rest are, at best, misinformed. Generally speaking, they’re flat-out incorrect.

To find the facts and give this circuit the proper understanding it deserves, every RAT model ever made (and quite a few prototypes that never saw the light of day) were obtained and studied in great detail. I wanted to understand the exact production differences over the years, so we disassembled the units, analyzed them using state-of-the-art Audio Precision equipment, measured individual components, built comparison charts, traced each circuit and closely examined the branding, logos and other identifiers of change. As far as I know, no one has ever gotten close to the level of research that we performed between 2018 and 2021.

Reliable sites like Reverb.com had inaccurate timelines with incorrect pictures of the respective models. And Wikipedia?… No. Just no.

There’s a reason for that.

A vintage unit is typically dated by reading the manufacturer codes on the back of the pedal’s potentiometers/knobs. Unfortunately, this is a flawed dating method. ProCo would have ordered thousands of potentiometers, and in doing so, many pedals were made with parts pulled from backstock at least two to three years older than the actual pedal being dated. In short, this means that you’ll see V1s, V2s, V3s with dates that overlap with each other’s true production years. Combine this with decades of people incorrectly “remembering” what RAT model sounds the best, and you have a historically inaccurate hot mess on your hands.

To properly build an accurate timeline and database of changes, I dated the pot codes, dated their components when possible, interviewed respective people involved in the eras of production and referenced over 1,000 online sales photographs, and studied the prototypes and the evolution of the engineers’ design ideas. The word RAT was in all black caps inside the white rectangle; this model gained the “White Face” RAT nickname due to this aesthetic. In 1986, this same model had a logo change that simply inverted the white and black colors, resulting in the more familiar white rectangle outline and font on the black enclosure.

This “White Face” model has gained a reputation as one of the holy grail RATs, and it even spawned a reissue in the nineties. The irony is that it is the same exact circuit as the previous Big Box V2 and the following “Black Face” 1986, as well as the 1989 RAT2. The “White Face” V3 update was a purely cosmetic change due to screen printing errors that needed to be solved. ProCo knew that the world wanted smaller pedals in the wake of brands like BOSS, DOD and Ibanez gaining more and more market share, and they wisely cashed in on the trend.

With this said, why would I put this particular version in my PackRat if it is not any different than the OG? Turbo V5 (1989)

The heart of the RAT’s tone comes from a design technique called symmetrical hard clipping. In this approach, a simple amplifier circuit amplifies the guitar’s signal and pushes it across a pair of clipping diodes. The result is that these diodes clip off the top of the waveform of the guitar and create a type of square wave distortion. Every RAT until 1989 utilized a typical silicon diode, just like the DOD 250 and BOSS DS-1, but the new Turbo RAT used LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Yup, these are the same LEDs you see in flashlights, your car’s dashboard, DVD players and almost every other electronic device on earth. This technique was a first in pedals (the same clipping style was used in the Marshall Guv'nor) and offered a completely new RAT experience.

The silicon diodes in previous versions have a lower forward voltage, resulting in a faster and more extreme clipping of the waveform. You could say this type of diode creates a very saturated tone. The Turbo’s LEDs have a much higher forward voltage, so they don’t activate or clip the signal as fast or as hard. It takes more signal to reach the point where they will “cut off” the waveform, which causes the phenomenon we know as touch sensitivity. You can set the Distortion lower, and as you play lightly, you will have an overdrive tone; dig into your guitar and play hard, and hear more clipping/distortion.

It is also worth noting that this model was the first RAT that offered the sloped enclosure that we see today. It also featured the new on/off status LED that had made its debut one year earlier in the 1988 RAT2.

4. This pedal allowed you to have two completely separate RATs and activate them independently or stack them together. It also introduced two brand new sounds into the RAT topology: “Clean RAT” mode and “Dirty RAT.” Due to the popularity of the “Dirty RAT” mode, they released a single pedal called You Dirty RAT that featured that single setting in a standard sloped RAT enclosure. This circuit utilizes germanium diodes in the symmetrical hard clipping section of the circuit. From the back workbench of Macari’s Musical Exchange on Denmark Street in London, Gary Hurst invented the Sola Sound* Tonebender* fuzz. Building on the foundation of the American-made 1962 Maestro Fuzz Tone*, Gary expanded what fuzz could do and gave a new sound to the thriving London music scene. Starting with his very first prototype made in a simple wooden box (April 1965) to the many other official Sola Sound* versions like the MKI (Sept 1965), MK2 (Mid 1966), MK3/MK4 (Feb 1970), etc., the Tonebender* has evolved just like the music that it helped create.

The JHS Bender is our attempt to recreate the most prized Tonebender* in my collection: my 1973 MK3 Silver/Orange “Onomatopoeia” version. This version has three very special germanium transistors, tons of mojo, and fifty plus years of experience, but it is finicky and it doesn’t always do what you want it to do. I had to ask: could we replicate this pedal sonically? Could we capture what it's all about, but in a way that is more consistent, dependable, and easy to manufacture? Yes. The end result is a pedal that gives you the touch, feel, and response of the vintage germanium fuzz but with accuracy and consistency of carefully chosen modern silicon transistors.

The controls are Volume, Tone, and Attack. Time is a manual control for the length of the repeats up to 1000ms. Mix controls the volume of the repeats, from fully clean signal to fully wet. Ratio controls the subdivision of the tap tempo with options of quarter note, dotted eighth note, eighth note, and triplets. Repeats controls the amount of repeats you will hear, from one repeat to infinite. The Lucky Cat will not do analog delay oscillation, but will do a musical digital oscillation when the repeats are maxed out and you play with the Time control. The Darken control works as an EQ for the repeats only. When fully clockwise the tone of the delay is the fully digital, unaffected sound. As you turn counter-clockwise the delay will darken in tone giving you an array of delay tones at your fingertips. The Modulation toggle has two modulation settings, Mod 1 and Mod 2, with the center setting disengaging the modulation. Mod 1 is a subtle modulation that gives the delay just the right amount of movement without being overwhelming. Mod 2 is a deeper modulation that gives you a seasick sound for those parts you want drenched in modulation.

CLEAN DIGITAL VS TAPE DELAY

On the left side of the Lucky Cat, you’ll find a dip switch for Vintage Tape/Digital Clean tones. Players ranging from The Edge, Trey Anastasio, Buddy Guy, Kirk Hammett, John Mayer, SRV, Carlos Santana and thousands more from every possible genre have utilized and depended on this classic iconic green box. If a single effect pedal was chosen to board a Voyager 3 mission and be solely responsible for showing the universe the sound of overdrive, it would undoubtably be Tube Screamer. Creating the Bonsai became an archeological dig of sorts that sent us deep into the history of this circuit by examining dozens of versions, variations and replications. At the end of it all, Josh chose nine of his personal and favorite units and we painstakingly replicated every nuance and aspect of each pedal. One of the most challenging parts of this project was accounting for component drift as many of these pedals were decades old and the internal components had strayed from their original values. Each pedal was individually replicated using our Audio Precision analyzer and various other methods that allowed us to perfectly replicate every aspect of the sound and feel of the unit. It's important to know that the Bonsai is not a "box of mods," it is exact replications of these nine units all housed in one box! The Bonsai is exact replication, not emulation. When you choose a mode on the Bonsai rotary, you are actually activating components specific to each mode and playing the unit that Josh chose along with all the quirks, drift, vintage mojo, and individuality that a vintage pedal has.

LETS TAKE A LOOK AT THE 9 MODES OF THE BONSAI BASED ON THE 9 PEDALS WE HAVE CHOSEN...

OD-1 - 1977

An overall brighter and slightly higher gain mode that does not utilize the Tone knob. Although Henry quickly shifted production focus to all types of stringed instruments (including basses, violas and guitars), they didn’t enter the guitar pedal market until the late 1960s with a series of knobless, treadle-based delightfully odd plastic pedals. Each of these four units (the Fuzz-Tone F1, Tremolo T1, Wah Wah W1 and Bass Boost B1) was housed in knobless, treadle-based enclosures allowing one parameter of each effect to be adjusted by foot. The Kay Fuzz Tone was most likely released in late 1968/early 1969. Initially designed as a low-cost version of the Shin-ei/Univox Superfuzz, this fuzz is one of the Edge’s go-to pedals. Fifty-four years later, JHS is releasing their spin on the Kay Fuzz Tone: the Mary-K. They’ve even added knobs and an expression pedal output for those who want to use it as it was originally intended.

Features:

Volume - Controls overall output volume.
